One of the best governance processes I learned about was a consent agenda. This moves housekeeping items (such as minutes approval, committee member approval, new member approval etc.) off the main agenda and all items are voted on at one time with one motion and NO DISCUSSION. This can often trim an entire 20-30 minutes off a board meeting.
Robert C. Harris of the NonProfit Center has a great piece that explains the consent agenda: Anatomy20of20Consent20Agenda204-08.
In fact, if you have not yet used this awesome resource chock full of templates, documents and power points you are missing out on a wonderful free resource! To view Robert’s website go to www.rchcae.com.
